Deacon George V. Lytle died Dec. 9 in his home in Marlton. He was 89 and had just celebrated his 64th wedding anniversary with his wife Mary.
Deacon Lytle was born in Montclair, N.J., to William and Margaret Lytle, the fourth of nine children. Two of his sisters, Mary Nitschke and Margaret Crook, survive him.
After travelling the world with the U.S. Navy, Deacon Lytle received a bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University, where he met his future wife, Mary Burke.
The couple married on Dec. 8, 1956, in Verona, N.J., and raised three children, George Jr. (Michele), Mary Rita Olcese (Joe), and Kathryn MacDonnell (Don).
Deacon Lytle was ordained to the permanent diaconate of the Diocese of Camden in 1980, and he baptized all nine of his grandchildren: Megan, Patrick, Molly, Jackson, Rebecca, JT, Kyle, Sean and Ethan. All of his grandchildren, as well as his great grandson Ari, survive him.
Deacon Lytle served at Saint Thomas More Parish, Cherry Hill; Our Lady of the Angels in Cape May Court House; Saint Ambrose, Deerfield, Florida; and Saint Isaac Jogues, Marlton.
“It was hard to come across George, a quintessential gentleman, father and Pop-Pop, without noticing his radiating demeanor and chronic upbeat attitude,” Deacon Lytle’s family wrote in a remembrance. “Whether he was preaching on the altar or simply enjoying time with friends or family, he never failed to make those around him chuckle. George had the heart of a true Irishman, with his gift of gab and quick wit.”
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Church of Saint Isaac Jogues, Marlton, on Dec. 15. Donations may be sent to Cathedral Kitchen in Camden.
