As the new communications and marketing manager for the diocesan Office of Catholic Schools, Michael Bress says he is looking forward not only to supporting the mission of Catholic education, but continuing to build on his own faith, as well.
“It’s exciting to be surrounded by others who have a strong faith and can share their knowledge,” he said. “With the wealth of resources among the priests, deacons and lay staff … I am looking forward to diving even deeper into my Catholic faith.”
Bress, himself a product of Catholic education, began his new role Sept. 13. He holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Saint Peter’s College, Jersey City, and attended Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill. Before arriving in the Diocese, he spent 15 years in marketing, including as assistant director of promotions and partnerships at The Franklin Institute education/science museum in Philadelphia.
“I have always wanted my work to have some drive and meaning. I got a chance to do that with The Franklin Institute,” he said, explaining that he is happy to have a mission in his new role, too.
“I understand the importance of education, but just as important, a faith-based education. Our Catholic schools not only give the students a great education, but a solid foundation of faith that can last their entire lives. I am so excited to be a part of that,” he said.
Dr. Bill Watson, diocesan superintendent of Catholic Schools, said Bress brings a can-do attitude, broad experience and high energy to South Jersey Catholic Schools.
“His perspective and guidance will help schools to keep their outreach, social media and marketing fresh for current families and everyone who is looking for a high-quality Catholic education for their children,” Dr. Watson said.
That can-do attitude was on display in his first days on the job, as Bress immediately began visiting schools and meeting staff as the academic year got underway.
“I hope to become an important resource for schools from a marketing and communication standpoint,” he explained. “I want to provide the principals and advancement directors with whatever resources they need, from tips, trends or advice to actual tools like how-to guides or in-person seminars. Maybe all they need is to talk something out, be heard – I am here for that, too.”
Bress, a member of Church of the Incarnation, Mantua, is the father of two boys and has been married to his wife, Michelle, for 12 years. As a resident of the area, he says he recognizes that the Diocese has a lot to offer.
“I always love the end of job descriptions that say, ‘other duties as assigned.’ I am ready for those duties, and I hope people will come to find out they can depend on me.”
