Father Robert J. Nolan, SAC, 86, a longtime teacher and chaplain at Bishop Eustace Preparatory School in Pennsauken, died Feb. 16.
Remembering him as a “wise counselor … gifted storyteller, and a steady spiritual guide who challenged young people to grow in faith, character and understanding,” the Bishop Eustace school community said that Father Nolan “left an enduring mark on all who had the privilege to know him.”
“We give thanks for his life of service and entrust him to the mercy of God, confident that his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of our students and alumni,” they said of the priest, who retired in 2023.
Born July 14, 1939, in Philadelphia to the late Robert and Marie (Falvey) Nolan, he attended Saint Monica’s grade school, followed by Saint John Neumann High School.
“Father Bob,” as he was lovingly known, entered the Pallottines at the Queen of the Apostles Novitiate in Sag Harbor, N.Y., beginning a lifelong commitment to the Society of the Catholic Apostolate. He made his consecration as a Pallottine on Aug. 22, 1963, embracing the community’s promises of chastity, poverty, obedience, perseverance, sharing of resources, and a spirit of service.
He completed his undergraduate studies at Xaverian Brothers College in Maryland and pursued theological studies at the Josephite Seminary in Washington, D.C. On June 20, 1970, he was ordained to the priesthood by Camden’s Auxiliary Bishop James Schad at the Saint Vincent Pallotti Chapel on the campus of Bishop Eustace Preparatory School.
He first came to the school during the 1971-72 academic year, teaching as part of the Theology Department. The next year, he served in student personnel services. Other assignments at the school included time in the Social Studies Department (1998-2000, 2004-2011), as chaplain (2004-2021) and in the Office of Institutional Advancement (2022).
Father Nolan also served at Saint Joseph Parish, Hammonton (later part of Saint Mary of Mount Carmel Parish). From 2000-2003 he was parochial vicar; he was pastor from 2003-2004.
In addition, he ministered in parishes in the Archdioceses of Baltimore and Newark, and the Dioceses of Brooklyn and Rockville Centre, N.Y.
A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Feb. 21 at Saint Mary of Mount Carmel Parish, Saint Joseph Church, 226 French St., Hammonton. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at the church.
Internment will take place immediately following the Mass at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 124 South First Road, Hammonton.
