The Hospitaler Sisters of Mercy marked 60 years of service in the Diocese of Camden and the United States on April 22 with a Mass celebrated by Bishop Joseph Williams at Saint Gianna Beretta Molla Parish in Northfield. Their religious community from across the globe, and many priests of the Diocese, were in attendance to show their gratitude for the sisters’ work.
A highlight of the Mass was the presence of two of the first four sisters in the United States: Sister Aurelia Damiani and Sister Eletta Selli, both 88, as well as Mother General Sister Lucia Maroor.
On Valentine’s Day 1966, four Hospitaler Sisters of Mercy arrived in the Diocese from Rome, at the invitation from then-Archbishop of Camden Celestine Damiano, who desired a compassionate ministry to the sick and needy in South Jersey. Today, the Hospitaler Sisters own and operate Villa Raffaella Assisted Living in Pleasantville.
