Latinos and Catholic schools in the diocese

The Diocese of Camden’s Office of Hispanic Ministry and Office of Catholic Schools recently hosted two workshops in Vineland focused on increasing awareness of the great value of Catholic schools to South Jersey’s Latino families.

The March 21 and 25 presentations, both held at the Saint John Paul II Retreat Center, brought in local and national leaders in Hispanic ministry to engage and encourage clergy and laity alike.

A former principal at a Columbus, Ohio, Catholic school spoke on March 21 to South Jersey’s pastors and priests who minister to Latinos, and shared her school’s increased efforts to provide Catholic education to this important demographic.

Yvonne Schwab said that after Saint James the Less School focused on Latino enrollment, its population doubled and test scores rose; today, the school is a national model for institutions on Hispanic outreach.

On March 25, Marianela Nunez, the Diocese of Camden’s Field Consultant for Latino Enrollment in the Catholic Schools Office, and her counterpart in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Nancy Sanchez, met with parish laity working in Hispanic ministry. They provided attendees with tips and tools on how to share information on Catholic schools with Latino families, and help their neighbors take advantage of opportunities for quality education.

Andrés Arango, Bishop’s Delegate for Hispanic Ministry in the Diocese of Camden, stated: “Enrolling our Latino children in Catholic schools will educate and inspire them spiritually, academically and in service to others.”

Since its inception in 2014, the Diocese of Camden’s Latino Enrollment Initiative has seen more integration of Hispanic families in the classrooms, with enrollment by these families up 20 percent.
