Bishop Dennis Sullivan went to Voorhees on Oct. 20 to bless a transit bus that will now be used as a travelling grocery store.
He gave his blessing to the 40-foot store-on-wheels during an outdoor ceremony for the media and supporters held at the Virtua Voorhees Hospital campus.
Sponsored by Virtua Health, the Eat Well Mobile Grocery Store will offer healthy food at below-market prices at senior centers, places of worship, low-income housing complexes and other locations in Camden and Burlington counties.
“The role of a health care organization is not only to care for the sick, but to proactively prevent people from becoming sick in the first place,” said Virtua Health President and CEO Dennis W. Pullin in announcing the project.
“We have an obligation to create communities of wellness, and one of the surest ways to achieve that is to help people eat well and improve their access to nutritious foods, so that convenience stores and fast-food restaurants are not the default selection.”
