Msgr. John J. Daiber, 83, who spent more than fifty years serving in the Diocese of Camden’s Brazilian Missions, died Aug. 18 in Brazil.
Beginning in 1961, under an initiative led by Archbishop Celestine J. Damiano, the Diocese of Camden sent priests on missionary work to Brazil. They built up convents, churches, schools and a seminary for vocations. Msgr. Daiber began there in 1969, during which time he served as vicar general in the Archdiocese of Goiânia and as a priest of Paróquia São José (the parish of Saint Joseph), in Goiânia. He retired July 1, 2022.
Born in Philadelphia on June 30, 1940, Msgr. Daiber studied at Jordan Seminary in Menominee, Mich., and Saint Vincent in Latrobe, Pa., before being ordained June 24, 1967, in Belgium.
He was parochial vicar at Saint Raymond Parish, the Villas, and in-residence at Saint Joseph Parish, Swedesboro, before serving in Brazil.
A viewing and funeral Mass were scheduled for Aug. 22 at Paróquia São José, with a burial there set for Aug. 25.
Bishop Dennis Sullivan will celebrate a Memorial Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 26 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Camden.
