After spending the past four years as principal of Sacred Heart School in Glyndon, Md., John Keeley was looking for a new job that was closer to his home in Newark, Del. During his search, he interviewed at multiple schools, but one stood out in particular: Resurrection Catholic School, Cherry Hill.
“As I explored the parish and school website, I was impressed by the beautiful church, the strong academic programs and the clear commitment to Catholic identity,” Keeley said. “I was grateful to be invited to interview, and after meeting the search committee, I felt a deep sense that Resurrection was where God was calling me.”
Keeley, who is about to start his first year as principal at Resurrection, brings to his new role more than 30 years of experience in education, including more than two decades in school administration. He is a certified principal and K-12 social studies teacher in New Jersey and Delaware, and has worked in and led schools in New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. He also has coached football and softball, and spent time working with adjudicated youth and students with a range of educational needs.
“These varied roles have shaped my deep commitment to serving all students and helping each one reach their full potential,” he said.
Keeley earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Montclair State University, a master’s degree in athletic administration from Idaho State University and a master’s degree in education administration from Saint Peter’s University, Jersey City. He also holds certificates in Catholic School Management and Alternative Education for Disruptive Youth.
For Keeley, Catholic education has been a central part of his life since his childhood.
“I attended Catholic elementary and high school, and earned one of my master’s degrees from a Jesuit university. While I have taught in both public and private schools, I firmly believe that a Catholic education provides the strongest foundation for the spiritual, moral and academic development of our children,” he said. “I am a Catholic school educator, and I truly believe that through this vocation, I help change the world.”
Faith has also been at the core of Keeley’s identity, having been born into an Irish Catholic family.
“It has provided comfort during difficult times and served as a moral compass throughout my upbringing,” he said. “The ability to celebrate and practice my faith in all aspects of my professional life is deeply important to me.”
Keeley lives with his family, including his two cats – Samson and Jennie Rose – in Newark, Del., and credits his fiancée, Tess, for her support and love.
As he embarks upon the latest chapter of his career at Resurrection Catholic, he looks forward to becoming part of the school community and to supporting its growth.
“What I look forward to most is spending time with a dedicated staff, getting to know and support the students and their families, and bringing a spirit of servant leadership to RCS,” he said. “With many years of experience in various educational leadership roles, I hope to bring a renewed vision, a sense of joy and excitement to Resurrection Catholic School and its community.”
