The matchup between the Gloucester Catholic and Paul VI girls basketball teams stole the show on Super Bowl Sunday.
The Paul VI High School girls basketball team needed two overtimes, but captured its third consecutive South Jersey Invitational Basketball Tournament on Feb. 8 at Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees.
The Eagles (18-1 record) received 22 points from junior Brooke Stagliano and 19 points from senior Rachel Thatcher to secure the 57-55 thriller over Gloucester Catholic (18-4). Stagliano was named tournament MVP after a performance that also included three 3-pointers, two rebounds and two assists. Thatcher had nine rebounds, a block and two steals for the champion Eagles.
The Rams were led by senior Talia Shumate, who had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Jahzara Green filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
The teams were tied, 31-31, after three quarters and 37-37 after regulation. Gloucester Catholic’s Jalyn Moore sent the game into double overtime by hitting a buzzer-beater 3-pointer at the end of the first extra session.
This was the second year in a row that these teams faced off in the final.
