Father Alfred Onyutha, Parochial Vicar of Vineland’s Saint Padre Pio Parish, lifts up the monstrance at Saint Stephen Parish in Pennsauken on June 3 during the Holy Hour of Prayer for the Ugandan Martyrs. In adoration, litany, song, prayer and reflection, the gathered community remembered the Christians who were killed by King Mwanga in the 19th century, during a time of persecution.
Their witness and deaths led to an increase in Christianity throughout Uganda, and in 1964, the 22 Roman Catholic martyrs were canonized by Pope Paul VI.
The evening was sponsored by the Camden Diocese’s Black Catholic Ministry Commission.
