
Sister Dawn Redmond (Sister John Damien) of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, died Sept. 15 in Wayne, N.J. She was 81 years old.
Sister Dawn entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, N.Y. in September 1955, made her first profession in June 1957, and final profession in August 1960.
Sister Dawn’s early ministries were in elementary and secondary education. In the Diocese of Camden she taught at Saint Patrick School, Woodbury, 1957-65, and Saint Lawrence School, Lindenwold, 1970-72.
She taught at other schools in New Jersey and New York and was a principal at Our Lady of Lourdes School, Paterson, N.J., 1987-2000.
Volunteering to teach ESL classes to immigrants became a passion and real joy for Sister Dawn in the later years of her ministry. From 2002-08, Sister Dawn was involved with OASIS in Paterson. She coordinated the school division and taught ESL classes. From 2008-09, she did volunteer work as a teacher at San Miguel Academy of Newburgh. While living in Asbury Park, N.J. from 2009-10 she was a volunteer and taught ESL classes to Haitian and Mexican students at Holy Spirit Church. Upon moving to Hawthorne, N.J. in 2010, she continued her volunteer ministry with ESL classes at Father English Community Center in Paterson.
Funeral services were held at Mount Saint Mary Dominican Center, Newburgh, on Sept. 22. Burial was in the Dominican Sister’s Cemetery on the Mount Saint Mary grounds.
