Sister Josefina Mendez, 81, MSBT, who served in Bellmawr and Lindenwold, died March 10.
Born May 15, 1944, in Quebradillas, Puerto Rico, she was the oldest of three daughters. At age 17, she and her family moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she quickly became active in her new parish, especially its catechetical program.
Sister Josefina entered the Missionary Servants of the Most Blessed Trinity on Aug. 5, 1966, and professed perpetual vows March 25, 1974.
In the Diocese of Camden, she served from 2017-2025 at Saint Joachim Parish, Bellmawr, and at Lindenwold’s Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Shrine, where she was involved in catechetical and pastoral ministry, and spiritual direction.
As well, she served in many missions in the United States and Puerto Rico, including Cabo Rojo and Mayagüez in Puerto Rico, and in the Dioceses of Cleveland and Rockford, and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
She also served her religious community in vocation and formation ministry, as well as a local superior.
“Sister Josefina had a very joyful spirit and a profound love for God,” her congregation remembered.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on March 20 at the Missionary Servants of the Most Blessed Trinity Motherhouse, Father Judge Chapel, 3501 Solly Ave., Philadelphia. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Philadelphia.
