Sister Mary Elizabeth Stanziola, a member of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, Villa Rossello, in Newfield, died Dec. 24 at the age of 87 at Misericordia Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in York, Pa. Born in Hazleton, Sister Elizabeth was the daughter of the late Anthony and Maria (Colicigno). She entered the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy in York on Sept. 14, 1942, and professed her vows on Aug. 16, 1944. She taught for many years in elementary schools administered by her religious order in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey. In the Camden Diocese, she served at Saint Mary Magdalen School Millville; Saint Joseph, Swedesboro; and Saint Rose of Lima, Newfield. She was coordinator of religious education at Saint Mary Parish in Rosenhayn and taught religious education at Incarnation, Mantua. In addition to her parents, Sister Elizabeth was preceded in death by her brothers Carmen, Joseph, Nicholas, Frank and Anthony Stanziola, and by her sisters Mary Flaherty and Rose DeNicola, all of Hazleton. She is survived by her sister, Sophia Klatch of Hazleton; nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, and her religious community. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Dec. 29 at the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy’s Provincial House, Villa Rossello, in Newfield. Burial followed at Pieta Cemetery, on the grounds of Villa Rossello.
