Sister Mary-Theresa McCarthy, 89, formerly Sister Mary Aidan, who taught at Holy Spirit High School in Atlantic City, died Aug. 17 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung.
Her first teaching assignments brought her to schools all over New Jersey. From 1957-59, she educated the students of Holy Spirit High School in the Diocese of Camden. In 1959, she was assigned as an instructor at her alma mater, Georgian Court College. One year later, she attended the University of Paris as a Fulbright Scholar and, on her return, completed her doctorate in French at Rutgers University in New Brunswick.
In 1975 she was a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow at the University of Chicago and in 1979 at Princeton University.
Sister Mary-Theresa also found time to write and publish poetry, translations of various books. Sister is survived by her brother Charles and his wife Charlotte of Point Pleasant, N.J., and her many cousins, nieces and nephews and Sisters of Mercy of the Mid-Atlantic Community.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 20 at Mount Saint Mary, Immaculate Conception Chapel in Watchung. Burial was in Saint Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.
