The Knights of Columbus Saint Jude Council 6551 has selected the recipients of this year’s Mignogna Family Memorial Scholarship. The tuition scholarship, which requires entrants to submit an essay, is awarded annually to selected Catholic high school students.
The students are: Nicholas Scaffidi of Saint Augustine Preparatory School, Richland, who wrote about the impact of Saint Mother Teresa of Kolkata; and Leonardo Perrone of Paul VI High School, Haddonfield, who wrote about his admiration for his grandfather. Each received a $1,000 tuition scholarship. Scaffidi is attending the University of Miami in the 2024-25 school year, while Perrone will continue at Paul VI.
In his essay, Perrone related how his grandfather – a first-generation Italian-American who was raised in Philadelphia and attended Northeast Catholic High School there – “has used his strong moral beliefs every day for 85 years.”
“I notice him assisting everyone before himself and always making sure the family is cared for properly. I am learning selflessness from his example, and I try to apply it to my life. … My grandfather teaches me how to be a gentleman through his courteous and honorable ways,” wrote Perrone.
Scaffidi, in his essay, wrote, “To say you love something is not true love, but loving unconditionally no matter the situation ultimately makes change. Mother Teresa understood this better than anyone, especially in the slums of Kolkata. She showed love and compassion. In the same way, I look to love unconditionally in all my relationships.”
“Through love, one can inspire change,” he said.
Council 6551 is based in Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish, Gibbsboro.
