The first Igbo Mass in the Camden Diocese was celebrated July 17 in St. Martin’s Church, Hammonton.
Father Joachim Oforchukwu, a Nigerian priest, celebrated the Mass, after being given permission by Bishop Joseph Galante.
“The Igbo community in the diocese was full of joy after celebrating the Eucharist in their native language, said Father Oforchukwu. “We thank the bishop for this wonderful opportunity he gave the Igbo community to worship their God in their native language,” he said.
Igbo is an official language of Nigeria and is also spoken natively in Cameroon.
“The idea of Igbo Mass was introduced by Deacon Vincent Okoro, who asked me if it would be possible for the Igbos to start hearing Mass in Igbo language here in the diocese. I reflected on the idea, considering the soaring number of Igbos in the diocese,” said Father Oforchukwu
Deacon Okoro created flyers for the Mass and made phone calls to spread the news of the Mass.
“I also commend the immense contributions of Dr. James Nwachukwu and Mr. Emeka Okerie to this special moment in the lives of Igbos in the Catholic Diocese of Camden,” said Father Oforchukwu. “The Igbo Mass would not have been celebrated without mentioning Rev. Thomas Donio who allowed us to worship in St. Martin’s Church, Hammonton.
Currently the Igbo Mass is celebrated on the third Sunday of every month at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church at 1 p.m.
“We encourage all those who will like to experience the celebration of the Eucharist in the Igbo tradition. You are all welcome to worship with us,” said Father Oforchukwu.
