Andrés Arango, Bishop’s Delegate for Hispanic Ministry in the Diocese of Camden, (fourth from left), and Father Hugh Macsherry, OFM, pastor of Saint Anthony of Padua Parish, Camden, stand with Camden leaders who organized the V Parish Encuentro, a day of reflection on how the Catholic Church can best serve the needs of local Hispanic Catholics. It was held May 13 in Saint Anthony of Padua Parish, Camden.

Camden residents discuss challenges, hopes at day of reflection

On May 6, in Camden, the parish community of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception gathered in Cathedral Hall for a day of reflection, discussion and development on how the Catholic Church can best serve local Hispanic Catholics.

Throughout South Jersey these past few months, 23 Hispanic parish ministries of the Diocese of Camden completed five-week V Encuentro sessions, ahead of their own parish-wide V Encuentro events this month and next fall’s diocesan V Encuentro.

Located in the diocese’s Deanery 1, and part of the Western Camden County Catholic churches, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception’s parish V Encuentro brought together 40 parishioners, young and old, to share their gifts and discover effective practices to better evangelize to current Mass-goers, and those “on the periphery in the city,” said Father John Fisher, OSFS, parish rector.

“We have to listen to (the needs of) our own parishioners, and listen to those on the periphery,” he said.

When asked what some of his parishioners’ challenges and fears were, he answered that families are worried about immigration policies that could separate parents and children; how to impart the Gospel to others and bring them into the church; and how to get more youth and young adults not only into pews, but engaged in parish life.

“The community also would like to see the parish have more classes on catechism, and classes on the English language,” Father Fisher.

Overall, he sees much promise in the steps his parishioners of all ages are taking to create and form disciples on fire for Christ.

“The day was a great hope of life” for the church, he said.
