Sister Mary Christina Geis, who taught at Immaculate Conception School and Camden Catholic High School, died April 13 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, N.J. at the age of 95.
Born in Woodbridge, N.J., she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1935, and taught at Immaculate Conception School in Camden 1937-39, and at Camden Catholic High School from September 1948-57.
Sister Christina spent 49 years teaching at Georgian Court College, and during this time traveled to the University of Florence, Italy, where she studied art history. Over the years, she produced an extensive range of art that included murals, portraits, oils and watercolors.
She also provided visiting artists and students the opportunity to display their work in the gallery of the art department, and today, the gallery is named in her honor.
She wrote a book, “Georgian Court: An Estate of the Gilded Age,” depicting the rich art and social history of the George Jay Gould Estate.
After retiring to McAuley Hall, she continued to enjoy many visitors and was always happy to point out some of her artwork which grace the halls.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 16 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center. Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
