A violent storm knocked out the electricity in the area so people had to eat by candlelight, but the music at Sullivan’s Jazz Cafe was spirited, the food was spicy and the mood was bright.

The 2014 House of Charity-Bishop’s Annual Appeal raised $7,253,871.98, with 41 parishes hitting their goal, it was announced at the House of Charity Parish Team Reports gathering held June 23 at St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Sicklerville.

Sheila McGirl, associate director of Development, said 2014 was “an outstanding year” for the campaign.

The success of several parishes was noted. The parish with the greatest increase of new donors is Our Lady Star of the Sea, Cape May. The parishes with the most donors were Our Lady of Peace, Willamstown (winter) and St. Damien, Ocean City (summer). St. Peter, Merchantville, had most dollars raised, $268,793.48. St. Peter also was presented with the Bishop’s Cup for its record of excellence.

So far the 2015 campaign has raised $6,508,733.77.

“We are realizing our greatest success since 2007,” McGirl said when the new total was announced.
