Editor:
I refer to Father Robert Gregorio’s column of March 19, in which he lists those “social justice” issues that we, as Roman Catholics, must strive to defend. Although I agree with Father’s exhortation, I find it surprising that he omits the number one social justice issue of our times — that of the right to life and the protection of human life from conception to natural death. It is truly disturbing to know how recklessly our political leaders are dealing with this issue in light of the corrupt and unethical practices presently being employed by our government to pass the Health Care Reform Bill (which does include anti-life aspects, no matter how hidden) in Congress. Their total disregard for our God-given right to life is frightening, as it discriminates against the most defenseless of our society – the unborn child in the womb and the sick, handicapped and elderly who are potential victims of this bill’s “take-a-pill-since-your-treatment-is-too-costly” mentality. This bill is literally a matter of life or death, as it deals with both the temporal and spiritual survival of our human race, and our respect for God’s Law, which is primary.
Along this line, I believe it important to clarify Father’s social justice issue of “discrimination against gays.” Let there be no mistake — while we love and respect our brethren who identify themselves as homosexual, we do discriminate against any homosexual behavior which is sinful and intrinsically-evil in God’s eyes. It is not in false compassion by confirming one’s neighbor in sin does one advance God’s Kingdom; rather, it is by upholding God’s Truth (Jesus Incarnate) in all matters where one truly exhibits the Love of God toward one’s neighbor, thus advancing the Kingdom.
