Father Francis J. Gramigna, who retired in 2007 after more than four decades as an educator, chaplain and parish priest, died May 22. He was 83.
Father Gramigna was pastor of three parishes: Saint Joseph, Sea Isle City, 1986-94; Assumption, Wildwood Crest, 1994-98; and Saint Francis de Sales, Barrington, 1998-2004. He spent his last three years of active ministry, 2004-07, as senior priest at Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish in Gibbsboro.
He began his priesthood in the education field, first at Cathedral Academy in Camden, where he was a member of the faculty 1965-67 and then at Paul VI High School, Haddonfield, 1967-71. He was chaplain at Cooper Hospital, Camden, 1974-78, and he was parochial vicar at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Woodlynne, 1971-72; Holy Saviour, Westmont, 1973-74; Saint Isidore, Vineland, 1978-83; and Saint Ann, Wildwood, 1983-86.
Born in Oaklyn, Father Gramigna was ordained May 16, 1964, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Camden, by Archbishop Celestine J. Damiano.
Father Gramigna was educated at Saint Mary Seminary, Baltimore, and earned a master’s degree in education at Loyola College, Baltimore. He served for a time as chaplain of the Saint Vincent de Paul Societies in the Diocese of Camden, as a member of the Common Policy for Pastoral Marriage Preparation, and other diocesan entities
