Dr. Marian (Mimi) Nowak, a parish nurse at Incarnation Parish, Mantua, will be honored for her work in disaster nursing education and service at the United Nations International Nurses Day.
The honor was awarded through a blind review selection committee of the country’s leading nurse educators. Due to the coronavirus crisis, the ceremony planned to take place at the United Nations in New York City has been postponed until May 2021
Upon retiring from Hammonton school system, Dr. Nowak felt called to serve as a nurse educator. As a senior citizen, she went back to college to earn a doctorate in nursing practice and has taught on a university level for the past 10 years.
She holds master’s degrees from Temple University, John Hopkins School of Public Health and Thomas Jefferson University. She earned her doctorate in nursing from Case Western University, Cleveland.
Dr. Nowak’s research addresses public health issues with a focus on emergency preparedness. Since earning her doctorate in 2013, the three-step disaster triage teaching method she developed has been taught both nationally and internationally. Her global outreach work for disaster nursing education has been featured in more than 50 countries.
Dr. Nowak developed the first student nurse disaster response certificate in the United States in cooperation with the Medical Reserve Corp (MRC) of the Philadelphia Department of Health, Division of Disaster Management and Bioterrorism.
Dr. Nowak has been a volunteer nurse with the South NJ MRC for 18 years. The student nurses outreach program resulted in 250 student nurse volunteers in the first two years of the program.
Dr. Nowak is also a United Nations Nursing Delegate with CICIAMS (an international Catholic Nursing organization). She and a team of nurses consult with 193 member nations presenting nursing viewpoints. As a Pan American President for CICIAMS, she assists Catholic Nursing Organizations from North, Central and South America develop public health focused projects.
She currently works with the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing as a Site Team member.
