Team Solar Squad members of Assumption Regional School, Galloway, are pictured working on their own design for a solar heater. The team won first place in the State of New Jersey and were regional finalists in this year’s ECYBERMISSION competition, a web-based science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) competition for students in grades six through nine. Inspired by the field of solar panels that are producing electricity for their school, Team Solar Squad decided to investigate if a solar heater could be used to heat a room. The team researched, designed, built and tested two different types of solar heaters. Each member will be awarded a $1,000 savings bond for their first place win in New Jersey and an additional $1,000 saving bond for being finalists in the regional competition, which represented the area from Maine to Virginia. Science teacher Patricia Naples shepherded the team in their work.
