Since 2018, the Diocese of Camden has implemented VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children as the safe environment training program for all adults who have regular contact with children. These sessions teach adults how to identify potential problematic behavior and to recognize the grooming process that predators use to become close to unsuspecting children. More importantly, these sessions teach adults what to do when they spot inappropriate behaviors.
The COVID-19 pandemic suspended all in person sessions in March and there have been no sessions during this time.
Beginning at the end of August and throughout the fall, in-person sessions will be held throughout the diocese at various locations and at different times and days of the week. These sessions will have in place several safety precautions, including: all participants to wear masks, safe distancing between participants, a limit of only 25 attendees per session.
To register for an upcoming VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children, go to the Diocese of Camden website, www.camdendiocese.org, scroll down to the bottom of the website and click on the VIRTUS icon. If an individual has already been background checked for the diocese or has attended a CAP session, he/she selects “Log in for existing accounts” If an individual is new, never been background checked or trained, he/she selects “First time registrant.” Then select “View a list of sessions.”
Every parish and school has a safe environment coordinator who can guide a registrant through this process.
All adults in regular contact with minors is expected to be trained whether the contact with children is live or virtual.
