Leonard Joseph Bednar, a strong supporter of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal – House of Charity, died Jan. 27 at Virtua Hospital in Marlton after a brief illness. He was 78.
“Len has been a dedicated volunteer and donor to the House of Charity – Bishop’s Annual Appeal for over 10 years,” the Camden Diocese’s Development Office said in a statement. “He worked hard for his parish Saint Mary, Cherry Hill, and for the House of Charity each and every year. We are so grateful for all that he has done and will miss him deeply. His positive attitude and warmth was something the whole House of Charity Office felt and it was an honor to have had the opportunity to work with him.”
Mariann Gilbride, Director of Development, recalled Mr. Bednar as botha kind man and a dedicated volunteer.
“When I was running the appeal, I looked forward to any of his calls about the appeal because he was so friendly and genuinely interested in doing the best he could to help the parish and the ministries being supported by the House of Charity. He always brought his sparkling smile to our volunteer events, and his engineering acumen to the detail of reporting the totals for Saint Mary’s parish,” she said.
Mr. Bednar began his 45-year professional career at Westinghouse Air Brake in Wilmerding, Pennsylvania, where he worked on testing the Metroliner and later on the high speed line between Lindenwold and Philadelphia. He later worked in specialized instrumentation sales with Weston Instruments, Magnetek and Metrix.
In his spare time he enjoyed coaching his sons in the Greentree Recreation Association in local and travel team competition and spending time and traveling with Patricia, his wife of 56 years.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Bednar is survived by his son Paul Bednar of Pittsboro, North Carolina and his wife Mary Beth; son Christopher Bednar of Houston, Texas and his wife Lauren; grandchildren Matthew Bednar, Andrew Bednar, Thomas Bednar, and Mary Ann Bednar.
A funeral Mass was held at Saint Mary Church in Cherry Hill on Feb. 3.
