Sister Evelyn Shehdan, a former principal of St. Mary School in Gloucester City, died Feb. 25 at The Wartburg in Mount Vernon, N.Y. She was 92.
Sister Evelyn, a Dominican Sister of Hope, was principal of St. Mary School from 1969-77.
She taught at St. Francis School in Newburgh, N.Y., 1940-41, St. Boniface School, Manhattan, 1941-46; St. Elizabeth School, Elizabeth City, N.C., 1946-48 and 1950-61; St. Mary School, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., 1948-50, Christ the King School, Yonkers, N.Y., 1961-66, Our Lady of Fatima School, Scarsdale, N.Y., 1977-86; and St. Mary School, New Monmouth, N.J., 1986-97. She was principal of Sacred Heart School, Newburgh, from 1966-69.
In 1997, she moved to Newburgh, where she served as a sacristan. In 2009, she moved to The Wartburg.
She was born to Beshara and Susan Barnhill Shehdan in Henderson, N.C. in 1918. Her baptismal name was Annie Helen Ruth.
She is survived by two brothers, Phillip and Fred; and four sisters, Theresa Roberts, Vicky Varner Smithfield and Hazel Babcock, all of North Carolina, and Evelyn Smith of Orlando, Fla. She was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Linwood; and a sister, Martha Davis.
A memorial service was held Feb. 28 at the Meadowview at The Wartburg. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 1 in the Dominican Sisters’ Chapel in Newburgh. Burial followed in the Dominican Sisters’ Cemetery in Newburgh.
