Brother John Malachy Cosgrove, O.P., a member of the Dominican Province of St. Martin de Porres, died at the age of 79 on Feb. 25 at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in New Orleans, where he resided since 2000.
Born in Audubon, Brother John attended St. Rose of Lima School, Haddon Heights, and Camden Catholic High School. He entered the Dominican Novitiate in 1952 and professed Solemn Vows at Holy Name Church, Philadelphia, in 1959.
A Dominican Brother for more than 58 years, he served in ministries in Somerset, Ohio; Holy Name Priory, Philadelphia; Chimbote, Peru; New Haven, Conn; New York; New Orleans; Dallas, Houston and Humble, Texas; and Providence, R.I.
Preceded in death by his parents, Catherine Mary Gaynor Cosgrove and Patrick Joseph Cosgrove, and two sisters, Sister Mary Cosgrove, R.S.M. and Patricia J. Carmody, Brother John is survived by two brothers, William Patrick Cosgrove and Leo Francis Cosgrove.
The funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Wisdom Chapel, New Orleans, on March 1. Interment was in the Dominican Friars Cemetery, Rosaryville, Ponchatoula, La. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dominican Friars Retirement Fund, 1421 N. Causeway Blvd., Suite 200, Metairie, LA 70001, are preferred.
