ManUp South Jersey returns to the Diocese of Camden on Nov. 13, to guide men of all ages in encountering Christ and understanding “Christian Manhood Through Faith and Family.”
The men’s spirituality conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Haddonfield’s Paul VI High School, where the event took place in 2018 and 2019, before being canceled last year due to COVID-19 concerns.
After experiencing a pandemic that has brought fear, pain, isolation and uncertainty, “We need that sense of fraternity [and] unity more than ever right now,” said Father John March, parochial vicar of Blackwood’s Our Lady of Hope Parish, who will lead a presentation on preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
“This conference is important for our Diocese to help men be inspired and motivated, grow deeper in their faith, and let them realize how deeply they are loved by God,” he added.
Joining Father March in addressing the audience will be Bishop Dennis Sullivan, who will lead the morning prayer and reflection; Danny Bader, motivational speaker and author; Kerry Fraser, broadcaster and former National Hockey League referee; Deacon David Harkins, permanent deacon at Holy Child Parish, Runnemede, and chief of police in Gloucester Township, and Deacon Anthony Cioe, permanent deacon at Saints Peter and Paul Parish, Sewell, and ManUp’s Master of Ceremonies.
Mike Bedics, diocesan director of the Office of Worship and Christian Initiation, will conduct the musical accompaniment for the conference.
Supplementing the main speakers this year will be three optional breakout sessions for participants, focused on Saint Joseph and this holy year dedicated to the foster father of Jesus; the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and how to plan a Gospel reflection group.
There will also be opportunities for Eucharistic Adoration and Confession. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
“The day is a chance for men to tune out distractions [of the secular world] and allow themselves to be in the presence of other like-minded men, coming together in worship and raising their voices in song,” said Deacon Cioe, adding that the retreat will help all gathered be “better husbands, fathers, sons … who God created them to be.”
“This weekend could change their lives,” he said.
