Families, members of various parish communities, clergy and religious came together June 17 in Atlantic City to celebrate Juneteenth. Held in Quaremba Hall, behind Saint Michael Church, the Parish of Saint Monica, the afternoon included song, prayer, discussions, the film “Unchained Memories” and more. In her opening prayer, Sister Selena Wilson, OP, quoted from Corinthians, saying, “For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.” Juneteenth, now a federal holiday, celebrates the 1865 emancipation of enslaved people. The holiday was first celebrated June 19 in Texas following the Civil War and under the terms of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862. Among the clergy in attendance: Msgr. Leonard Scott, a retired priest of the Diocese, Father Kevin Mohan, pastor of the Parish of Saint Monica, and Father Gerard Marable, pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Galloway. (Photos by Alan M.
