Brother Mickey O’Neill McGrath, OSFS, has been honored with two awards for this book “Madonnas of Color.”
The 123-page book that celebrates Mary was released last year by Clear Faith Publishing.
Brother Mickey was recognized by the Association of Catholic Publishers with a first place award in the Inspirational category. From the Catholic Media Association, he took second place in the category of Collections of Prayers.
“I am both honored and delighted to receive these awards for ‘Madonnas of Color,’ especially at this time in our history as a Church and nation, when divisions and anger driven by fear are all too common,” said Brother Mickey, who lives and works in Camden.
“I firmly believe that nothing unites us as a human family better than our common love for art, music, and beauty of any kind. And who better than the Blessed Mother to lead the way?” he said.
In a 2022 interview with the Catholic Star Herald, Brother Mickey explained that African-American spirituality has become a profound influence on his life and work over the years, particularly that of Sister Thea Bowman, a Catholic convert and Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration who was designated a Servant of God in 2018.
The perseverance of Augustus Tolton, who was born a slave, to become the first American Black ordained a priest, was among others whose faith journeys inspired him.
