Fifty middle school students from around the Diocese gathered Nov. 9 at Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill, to compete in the annual iDesign STEM Challenge.
Encouraged to use design thinking – understand, define, image, create and innovate – the teams of five were challenged to collaborate on a project that could improve everyday life. The event also included the creation of an origami phone stand, a scavenger hunt and a short presentation by the teams.

The winning team, “Innovation Corporation” from Christ the King Regional School, Haddonfield, won the event with its Toddler Duckling Device, a holder to secure a cell phone, especially in the car. The team was: Kevin Dever, Thomas Coelho, Chuck Kelly, Declan Walsh and Gio Barone. Each team member won a $1,000 scholarship to Camden Catholic, should they choose to attend the school.
The challenge is hosted by the high school’s STEM director, Dr. An Nguyen, along with her STEM club students. Other schools that participated were: Saint John Paul II Regional School, Stratford; Resurrection Catholic School, Cherry Hill; Saint Rose of Lima School, Haddon Heights; Saint Peter School, Merchantville; and Our Lady of Hope Regional School, Blackwood.
