Catholics are asked to observe the Lenten tradition of almsgiving the weekend of March 9-10 by participating in the Catholic Relief Services Collection.
The annual collection, overseen by the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops, supports the work of Catholic organizations that aid victims of war and natural disasters, help build peace in places of conflict, and minister to migrants and others with specific pastoral needs. The Diocese of Camden collected $89,125 for Catholic Relief Services last year.
Contributions to the collection are distributed to: Catholic Relief Services for international relief and development; Catholic Legal Immigration Network, or CLINIC; the Holy Father’s Relief Fund for emergency aid; the USCCB Department of Migration and Refugee Services for resettlement; the USCCB Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development for advocacy, and the USCCB Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church for evangelization.
Some of the outreach funded by this collection in 2022 included: helping to promote peace at the South-North Korean border; aiding refugees from Ukraine, Haiti, Nicaragua and more; and providing healthy food and clean water to communities in Africa.
