All are invited to take part in the longstanding tradition of celebrating the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Wedding of the Sea in August.
Bishop Dennis Sullivan will be celebrating two Masses in honor of the Assumption: the vigil Aug. 14 at Notre Dame de la Mer Parish, Saint Ann Church, Wildwood; and the solemnity Aug. 15 with the Parish of Saint Monica, Atlantic City. Both will include a procession to the ocean for the Blessing of the Sea after Mass.
In Atlantic City, for the second year in a row, Mass will be celebrated at Hard Rock Casino’s Etess Arena. This year, the parish is inviting all to make the celebration a destination event by staying for the weekend and attending a luncheon at the Hard Rock’s Harvest Buffet after the Blessing of the Sea.
Deacon Mike Bortnowski, who serves at the Parish of Saint Monica, said the Wedding of the Sea Festival is the signature annual event for the parish. “It is a tradition that has become not only a religious, but a civic and cultural event in the Atlantic City community. … The Wedding of the Sea celebrates the relationship of the city and the sea and asks God to grant success to the work of so many to build up our great city.
“Historically, around 40% or more who attend our Wedding of the Sea event each year come from the Diocese of Camden, which means that up to 60% of those who attend are from outside our Diocese. That being said, we are offering a limited number of discounted hotel rooms and buffet lunch tickets to encourage them to stay, share their faith and break bread with us at lunch after the conclusion of the event,” Deacon Bortnowski said.
The Vigil Mass in Wildwood will be celebrated at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 14. Saint Ann Church is located at 2901 Atlantic Ave. For more information, visit notredamedelamer.org.
The Mass with the Parish of Saint Monica will be celebrated at noon Aug. 15. The Hard Rock Casino is located at 1000 Boardwalk, Atlantic City. To purchase tickets for the luncheon, call Saint Monica’s parish office at 609-345-1878 or visit tinyurl.com/3xn4zmaz.
