All are invited to an evening discussion Oct. 2 dedicated to helping the faithful live distinctly Catholic in a polarized political world.
“Civilize It: Living Authentically Catholic in a Divided America” will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Catholic Community of Christ Our Light in Cherry Hill. The event will be an opportunity for participants to learn how to “respond in hope and God’s friendship regarding matters of politics, social concerns and economics,” noted Dr. Michael Sims, director of the diocesan Office of Life & Justice Ministries. The office is co-sponsoring the event with the Catholic Community of Christ Our Light’s Justice and Outreach Commission.
The evening will include a panel featuring Dr. Kenneth Craycraft, author of “Citizens Yet Strangers: Living Authentically Catholic in a Divided America”; Father Jon Thomas, pastor of Christ the King Parish, Haddonfield; and Dr. Maria Elena Hallion, executive director of Catholic Charities of South Jersey.
“Dr. Craycraft will address the need to have our faith inform our politics,” Dr. Sims said, adding that the author will help those gathered “move away from a ‘rights language’ to the language of Catholic Social Doctrine that focuses on human dignity, solidarity, subsidiarity and the common good.”
In addition to addressing the pastoral concerns of living one’s faith and being a good neighbor, Father Thomas will “draw upon his years of experience as the chaplain for New Jersey’s AFL-CIO, and working with poor and vulnerable communities in Atlantic City,” Dr. Sims continued.
Dr. Hallion will “address the mission of Catholic Charities to restore dignity and independence to individuals and families, especially the poor and vulnerable, as the challenge for all Christians to live out the Gospel,” he said.
