Archbishop William Lori of the Archdiocese of Baltimore announced today that Father Michael Romano has been appointed Rector of Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md., for a five-year term beginning July 1, 2025.

In his letter to Father Romano, Archbishop Lori highlighted the significance of this appointment, stating, “You bring much experience and many wonderful gifts and talents to the all-important role of forming priests for many dioceses in the United States. Most of all, it is your spirit of prayer and your priestly example that will be crucial in helping to form these men after the mind and heart of Christ, our Great High Priest, for service to the People of God.”

Since 2019, Father Romano has served as Vice-Rector and Director of Admissions at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. Previously, he served as priest secretary to Bishop Dennis Sullivan and Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Camden.

Bishop Sullivan praised Father Romano’s appointment, calling it “a blessing for the Seminary and the university community at Mount Saint Mary’s. It is also an honor for our diocese and presbyterate. His love of God, the priesthood, and his care for those discerning a vocation to the priesthood will sustain him as a seminary rector. On behalf of the priests, religious, and lay faithful of the Diocese of Camden, I express my heartfelt congratulations to Father Michael Romano as he accepts this new responsibility in service to the Church.”

In an interview with the Catholic Star Herald, Father Romano expressed gratitude for his formation in the Diocese of Camden, stating, “The bishops, priests, and wonderful people of the Diocese of Camden helped form and mold my priestly heart. I am humbled, yet excited, that I have been asked to share that with the seminarians of Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary. What a blessing to become the spiritual father for that community! I pray that my love and joy of the priesthood can play some small part in forming good, holy priests for the Church in the United States. I am grateful for the support of the faithful in Camden and will rely on their prayers.”

Father Romano’s previous assignments include serving as parochial vicar at Church of the Incarnation in Mantua; chaplain at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield; parochial vicar at Saint Joseph Parish in Sea Isle City; and as a member of the Committee for the Continuing Education and Spiritual Formation of Priests.

In 2003, Father Romano earned a BA degree at Saint Charles Seminary, Wynnewood, Pa., and an STB from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, Italy, in 2006. He completed his STL degree at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute at the Lateran University, Rome, Italy, in 2008.

He was ordained on June 23, 2007, at Saint Teresa Church in Runnemede.

STATEMENT OF BISHOP DENNIS J. SULLIVAN, D.D. ON THE APPOINTMENT OF THE REVEREND MICHAEL M. ROMANO AS RECTOR OF MOUNT SAINT MARY SEMINARY

Archbishop William A. Lori of the Archdiocese of Baltimore announced this morning, the appointment of one of our finest priests, the Reverend Michael M. Romano, as Rector of the historic Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland. His appointment is truly a blessing for the Seminary and the university community at Mount Saint Mary’s. It is also an honor for our diocese and presbyterate.

Father Romano, who has served as a parochial vicar, vocations director, secretary to me and for the past 5 years as a member of the faculty of the Pontifical North American College in Rome, is a gifted man with many talents. His love of God, the priesthood, and his care for those discerning a vocation to the priesthood will sustain him as a seminary rector.

On behalf of the priests, religious and lay faithful of the Diocese of Camden, I express my heartfelt congratulations to Father Michael Romano as he accepts this new responsibility in service to the Church.
