Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan was recently honored for his dedication and years of service to the people of Atlantic City.
“Thank you very much. I am very humbled by this recognition,” Bishop Sullivan said as he received a framed resolution listing his many accomplishments as the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Camden. City Council members, priests of the Diocese and members of the community were on hand as the honor was given May 21 in the Henry E. “Hank” Tyner Memorial Council Chambers at City Hall.
Bishop Sullivan told the council and all present that none of his accomplishments there would have been possible without the priests of Atlantic City. “The bishop walks on the feet of the priests,” he said. “And that’s what I was able to do.”
He expressed gratitude to the priests present who have served at the Parish of Saint Monica over the years: former pastors Msgr. William Hodge and Father Patrick Brady; Father Kevin Mohan, current pastor; and Father Robert Hughes, who will become pastor July 1.
Among Bishop Sullivan’s accomplishments listed on the resolution: overseeing the 2015 parish mergers, which “have allowed the Catholic faith to thrive in the city”; participating annually in the Parish of Saint Monica’s celebration of the feast of the Assumption and Wedding of the Sea, “bringing with him increased focus on a great event that brought many visitors”; and kicking off the National Eucharistic Revival with a procession on the city’s boardwalk, “which saw more than 1,000 pilgrims walk and pray … in a public expression of the power of the Eucharist.”
In recognizing his retirement in the resolution, the council members praised Bishop Sullivan’s commitment to Catholic education throughout South Jersey, including the city’s Our Lady Star of the Sea Regional School and Holy Spirit High School in Absecon.
