Thunderous applause greeted Father Robert Hughes on June 27 as he walked into Cathedral Hall in Camden. It was there that clergy, religious women and men, and diocesan staff gathered to honor Father Hughes, Moderator of the Curia, for his 11-plus years of service as vicar general of the Diocese of Camden. “You are the ones on the front lines; you are the ones who are the faces of the Church to our parishes,” Father Hughes told those gathered. “It’s been an absolute pleasure over these years to work with you.” To the newest vicar general, Father Jon Thomas, Father Hughes said, “I give you good wishes. You’re in good hands here.”
During a Mass celebrated the same day at the nearby Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Bishop Joseph Williams said, “We thank Father Hughes for his Christ-centered ministry. May our Blessed Mother continue to bless him in his ministry in Atlantic City.” Father Hughes began his new assignment July 1 as pastor of the Parish of Saint Monica in Atlantic City.
