HADDONFIELD – Bishop Joseph Williams celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving on Nov. 20 with the students, faculty and administration of Paul VI High School.
In his homily, Bishop Williams related how growing up, he went to Mass with his family every Sunday. He continued that practice into his college years. While on a trip to California with his college tennis team, he got up early for morning Mass. He planned to slip out of the room quietly, but two of his teammates woke up and asked to tag along.
Years later, as a priest, he received a call from one of those teammates sharing what an impact that day had on his faith.
The story, Bishop Williams said, serves as a reminder to be confident in the faith, and he encouraged the students to invite others to encounter Christ, and to “thank Jesus for the wonderful gifts He has given us.”
At the end of Mass, members of the student council presented Bishop Williams with Paul VI gear and a few tennis-themed gifts, inspired by one of his favorite sports. The Bishop also got a Spirit Week tour of the school, and along with Dr. Bill Watson, superintendent of Catholic schools, met with the student council and school administrators as all enjoyed refreshments and reflected on the school year.
