Sister Mary Emeric, 87, died Feb. 25 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, N.J.
A teacher for more than 50 years, she taught at St. Nicholas, Atlantic City, and other schools in New Jersey.
Sister Mary Emeric, the former Elizabeth Pitonyak, was born in Rossiter, Pa., and at an early age the family moved to Trenton. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1947 and later received a bachelor’s degree from Georgian Court College and a master’s degree in education from Seton Hall University.
She is survived by her sister, Helen Pitonyak, nephews, Andrew, Jr. and Thomas Pitonyak, all from Trenton and many cousins and Sisters of Mercy in the Mid-Atlantic Community.
She was predeceased by her parents Imrich and Mary Pitonyak, sister, Sister Mary Evelyn and brother, Andrew Pitonyak, Sr.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in Watchung March 1. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery, Trenton.
