It was a dream come true for parishioners of the Church of Saint Mary, as the Phillie Phanatic surprised the community during their sixth annual parish festival Sept. 12. The beloved mascot enjoyed shenanigans with children and adults alike – as well as South Jersey’s Anthology band and musician Larry Ragone. The Phanatic gave out big hugs to those of all ages, including Father Michael Matveenko, pastor.

At one point, the Phanatic even snagged the camera from Joe Warner, turning the tables to snap photos of the Catholic Star Herald freelance photographer. In addition to bounce houses, games and food, festivities included Father Matveenko singing with the band. The festival honors the parish’s feast day, the Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The parish chose this feast day because it honors the Blessed Mother in all of her names and devotions.
