Allegany Franciscan assumes role as prison ministry

Sister Mary Lou Lafferty, OSF began ministry with Catholic Charities as prison ministry coordinator on Sept. 3.
Over the past 12 years, Sister Mary Lou has served her congregation in congregational and regional leadership. Prior to this ministry, she served in the Catholic Schools Offices as assistant superintendent in the dioceses of Paterson, N.J., and Boston and as principal in many dioceses, among them being Camden at St. Agnes School in Blackwood.
Sister envisions prison ministry as being multi-faceted. Outreach to the incarcerated would be a priority; however, ministry to those affected by this situation, especially spouses and children, would be addressed.
“Catholic Charities is thrilled to have Sister Mary Lou join our hope-filled community,” said Kevin Hickey, executive director, “Sister Mary Lou brings a varied background to her work with prison ministry and that variety of experience is so helpful to us in the difficult work which we undertake.”
Over the years, many priests, deacons, religious and laity have volunteered their time and energy to this corporal work of mercy … visiting the imprisoned. Throughout the next couple of months, Sister Mary Lou will be making contact with the parishes, so that a master list may be created and opportunities provided for support and encouragement for these volunteers.
