The Catholic Star Herald highlights the Diocese’s student athletes who stood out during the month of April.

Sophia Greenwood

Paul VI High School, Haddonfield

Golf

Sophia Greenwood

The Paul VI High School girls golf team won the Camden County Commissioner’s Cup for the first time in school history, and Sophia Greenwood led the way.

The Eagles’ junior golfer shot a team-best 90 during the annual tournament at Valleybrook Country Club in Blackwood on April 22. Greenwood and her teammates Natalya Slonis, Annalise Capoli and Dylan Nash combined for a score of 412, which won the girls competition by four strokes over second-place Eastern High School. In dual meets, the Eagles were a perfect 5-0 on the month.

Maya Hutchinson

Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester City

Softball

Maya Hutchinson

The Rams appear to be in good hands the next few years, as Maya Hutchinson has continued her red-hot softball career into her sophomore season. After batting .409 as a freshman last year, Hutchinson hit safely in every game in April, carrying a .625 season average into May. In just nine games this season, the Gloucester Catholic infielder has 20 hits, six walks, seven RBIs and 20 runs scored to lead her team to a 6-3 record through April 30. The Rams were riding a four-game winning streak heading into May.

Sean Leahy

Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill

Lacrosse

Sean Leahy

Sean Leahy provided the dramatic game-winning goal, as the Camden Catholic High School boys lacrosse team secured a huge win by defeating Paul VI, 12-11, in overtime April 22 to lift the Irish to a 4-4 record. Leahy, a junior, is in the midst of a breakout season with 19 goals through his first eight games, following a 16-goal sophomore campaign. Leahy’s five hat tricks and his 13 assists this season were both tops on the team through April 29.

Landon Mack

Bishop Eustace Preparatory School, Pennsauken

Baseball

Landon Mack

Landon Mack has shown a display of power seldom seen in high school baseball. The Bishop Eustace Preparatory School senior belted eight home runs and drove in 23 runs in just 39 at-bats in April. Mack batted .436 with a 1.103 slugging percentage in those 13 games.

The Rutgers University commit has been just as dominant on the mound, posting a 0.75 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 18 and two-thirds innings. During his career, Mack has pitched 101 innings and struck out 130 batters.

Noah Sanders

Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill

Track and Field

Noah Sanders

School records have been no match for Noah Sanders this spring. The Camden Catholic High School senior smashed a pair of throwing records at the Lenape Field Day on April 19. Sanders broke his own school record in the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, 11.5 inches. As an encore, Sanders threw his best discus by nearly 30 feet to reach 127 feet, 5 inches to claim another Camden Catholic record. Sanders showed the discus record was no fluke by tossing 122 feet, 7 inches the following week at the Delsea Crusader Field Meet on April 25.

Brielle Soltys

Holy Spirit High School, Absecon

Lacrosse

Brielle Soltys

Holy Spirit High School junior Brielle Soltys is wasting little time in piling up the milestones. On April 17, Soltys reached her 200th career draw control against Ocean City, and on April 27, she scored her 100th career goal in a 13-4 win over Lenape. Through the first month of the season, Soltys has pieced together an impressive stat line with 28 goals, 14 assists, 14 ground balls and 86 draw controls. Soltys, an Ohio State University commit, has helped the Spartans race out to a 9-1 start with hopes of returning the Non-Public B state championship for a third consecutive season.
