Individuals on the autism spectrum, and their families, attended – and served at – a Mass of Welcome and Inclusion on April 6 in celebration of Autism Acceptance Month.
The faithful gathered in Saint Frances Cabrini Church, Saint Damien Parish, for the Mass, which was celebrated by Father Thomas Newton, pastor, and Father Hugh Bradley, director of the Ministry With the Deaf and Persons With Disabilities, which falls under VITALity Catholic HealthCare Services Diocese of Camden.
Among those to help serve during the Mass were Frank Conway, above, who helped distribute Holy Communion alongside Father Bradley; and Jeremy Ryan and his mother, Krissy Smith, below, who proclaimed the second reading.

After the morning Mass, many gathered in Culliney Hall for fellowship, connection and continued celebration of a shared faith and community. Such sensory-friendly liturgies are designed to be welcoming and inclusive, with gentle lighting, no incense, a shorter homily, and soft, calming music. Families are encouraged to participate in whatever way feels most comfortable – whether that means using noise-canceling headphones, sunglasses, comfort items or taking a movement break.
