Knights of Columbus from Our Lady Queen of Peace Council 6247, Pitman, exhibited their principles of charity, unity and fraternity June 19 during a visit to the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home at Vineland.
“We wanted to express our thanks to the military for their services, and we thought bringing them lunch and spending time with them on Father’s Day would be good,” said Michael Martorano, financial secretary of the Knights council.
Though last-minute COVID restrictions prevented them from meeting with the veterans for lunch, the council donated 125 hoagies and bottles of water to the facility. For his friend Lou Polizzi, a retired Navy veteran living in the home, 90-year-old Knight Bernie Corona brought along a black-and-white photo of the two taken about 70 years ago, after they graduated the same year from two different high schools in Vineland. A helpful attendant promised to pass along the photo.
Of the 10 Knights who visited, six are veterans.
