Father Kenneth Hallahan, senior priest at Our Lady of Hope Parish, Blackwood, walks with men carrying crosses bearing the names of Irish Hunger Strikers at the end of Mass May 5. Celebrated at St. Matthew Church, National Park, the memorial Mass honored the hunger strikers. Irish republican prisoners in Northern Ireland held two hunger strikes, in 1978 and 1981. Before the second strike was called off, 10 prisoners died, including Bobby Sands who was elected to Parliament during the strike. The May 5 Mass was sponsored by the Ancient Order of Hibernians Commodore John Barry Division 1, Gloucester County.
