On May 15 from 7-9 p.m., friends and family of 2005 Gloucester Catholic graduate Scott Kaplan will celebrate his life by hosting the eighth Annual Scott Kaplan Memorial Swim at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology (GCIT), 1360 Tanyard Road, Sewell.
Scott was a brilliant, standout student and star athlete who died a month after graduating.
He was a member of the National Honor Society and swam all four years for the Rams swim team, where he won the 200 meter freestyle during the Tri-County Championship All Star meet every year of his high school career.
Scott’s coach, Kevin Nolan, said that since Scott’s passing, the Rams have kept the streak going by continuing to win the 200 meter freestyle event each year at the meet.
The Memorial Swim was organized by the Paccione, Brady and McBride families along with Scott’s parents, Rose and Steve Kaplan, as a way to keep Scott’s memory alive. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Scott Kaplan Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Both swimmers and non-swimmers are all welcome to attend the event, which will include swimming games and relay races.
The cost of the event is $10 for students in eighth grade and up and $20 for all others.
Anyone who registers before May 5 will receive a commemorative T-shirt.
