Sister Louise Gorka, RSM (formerly Sister Mary Paulita), 87, of Mays Landing, and former teacher at Saint Nicholas School in Atlantic City, died Jan. 21 at Atlantic City Hospital.
Born in South Amboy, she had lived in Sayreville before she entered the Sisters of Mercyon Sept. 24, 1952.
From 1954-64, Sister Louise ministered in Saint Nicholas School. She also taught at others schools in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Following her teaching career, Sister Louise served in parish ministry for 14 years and then helped found The Gathering Place, an adult education and spiritual retreat center in Middletown, N.J.
“All of these ministries were permeated with music, which was an integral part of her life,” her order recalled when announcing her passing. “This great woman is so deserving of a heavenly welcome. All those whose lives she touched are better for having known her for any length of time.”
Surviving are her brother and his wife Paul and Gloria Gorka, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Jan. 28 at Saint Catherine Roman Catholic Church in North Middletown, N.J. Burial followed at Saint Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery in Sayreville.
