Parish choir celebrates an anniversary

parishchoir-webThe La Tuna de La Alegria Choir of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Camden will celebrate 43 years of music on Saturday, March 10, 7-11 p.m., at Nicolosi Catering in Woodbury.

Started on March 1969 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, at the parish’s former location on Benson Street in Camden, the 22-member Hispanic choir has sung every Sunday at the church for 43 years. Since the parish merger with the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the group has been performing one Sunday a month at the Cathedral, as well.

When not praising the Lord at Mass, the choir has brought its talents to nursing home residents every Christmas, into hospitals and people’s homes, and even to television viewers.

La Tuna de La Alegria has recorded three albums, and participated in a charity event at Puerto Rico.

The group also performs at weddings and funerals, free of charge.

“We touch people’s hearts,” said Edna Paris, director of the choir.

“Our mission is to bring some happiness into people’s lives, with a positive message, through our music and song.”

Father Matt Hillyard, OSFS, rector of the Cathedral Parish, will give a blessing at the banquet March 10. The cost is $25, and it will take place at Nicolosi Catering, 1 Hessian Ave., in Woodbury. For information, call 856-534-7770.
