Paul VI High School’s varsity baseball team captured the Ralph Shaw Classic championship last weekend in Audubon, rallying in dramatic fashion during the opening round before securing a signature win over a ranked opponent in the title game.
The Eagles opened the tournament April 11 with a come-from-behind 13-10 victory over Audubon, erasing a four-run deficit with three runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh. Gabriel Rogers led the charge with a standout performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Dom DiGialleonardo added two hits, including a double, while Mason Myers contributed two hits and two runs. Jack Walsh earned the win on the mound with a scoreless inning of relief.
That momentum carried into the next day’s championship matchup against Bishop Eustace, ranked No. 18 in the NJ.com Top 20, where the Eagles secured a 6-4 victory to claim the tournament title. Christian Williams struck out six batters over 4 2/3 innings to earn the win, while Mike Fanelli closed the game with 2 1/3 innings of relief to record the save.
Offensively, Gabe Lerro paced Paul VI with a 2-for-4 performance that included two doubles and two RBIs. Cayden Conway also drove in two runs, and Caleb Kassekert added an RBI single as the Eagles built a lead with a three-run third inning and extended it in the fifth.
For their efforts throughout the tournament, Rogers, Lerro and Williams were named tournament MVPs.
The championship marks Paul VI’s first Ralph Shaw Classic title and provides strong early season momentum as the Eagles continue their 2026 campaign.
