TOMS RIVER — Brett Tenuto slammed a solo home run and Elliott McCummings cracked a key RBI double to back the solid pitching of freshman John Murphy, lifting Gloucester Catholic to the NJSIAA Non-Public A state championship, June 9, with a 4-1 win over Don Bosco Prep at Toms River North.
Murphy completed a brilliant frosh season by scattering three hits and striking out 8 against the No. 1 ranked team in the state. He finished his season with a 7-2 overall record.
The state title was the third in a row and 16th overall for the Rams, who finished with a 27-4 record. Earlier in the week, they defeated St. Augustine Prep, 12-4, to capture the Non-Public A sectional championship at Rowan University.
